X-Files - Dreamland

Mulder and Scully discuss the meaning of their endless search for the Truth as they drive to Area 51.

311 - beyond the grey sky

It is a gift I know
A moment of bliss that we hold
A firecracker flash of light then on
To the next plane soul remain
Come along if you dare
It's gonna be that you're scared
Lovely life I thank you
For the reason to see the pain through

Light a candle for the dead
The wick is burning returning what we have
It's who we are
We'll reach you if you're beyond the furthest star

Don't give up the fight to stay alive and even if
you have to
Find the reason of another's pain if they lose you
If not for your self then those around who care
like I do
One day you'll see the clear blue

Beyond the Gray Sky
Light a candle...
The wick...
It's who we are...

One day youill see the clear blue
Beyond the Gray Sky

I can't believe you didnit call
What made you want to end it all
Wasn't there something I should have tried
To help you see beyond the gray sky

Living on Mars pt 1/5 (Mars: Making The New Earth)

Description: The notion of bringing Mars to life - transforming a cold, dry, uninhabitable desert into a living planet - is called terraforming, has been around for almost a century. Initially just a science fiction concept, it has become a subject of serious scientific investigation. Recent discoveries of rocks and minerals found by the Mars rovers show it must once have had warmer, habitable living conditions. Now, using photorealistic CGI visualizations, we'll make a science fiction dream of Mars - a world of trees, rivers and blue skies - a plausible future, bringing it to life after three and a half billion years in a deep freeze.

Living on Mars
STEPS TO TERRAFORMING MARS
On the surface, the red planet's freeze-dried world of rocks, ice, and dust looks like an unlikely place to plant a garden. But rocks and
minerals found by the Mars rovers show it must once have had warmer, habitable living conditions. Now, using photorealistic CGI visualizations, we'll make a science fiction dream of Mars — a world of trees, rivers, and blue skies — a plausible future, bringing it to life after three-and-a-half billion years in a deep freeze.
• The first and most important step in making Mars habitable is to warm it up, raising the average temperature 35 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit. (Average Mars temperature is about -81 degrees Fahrenheit.)

Bold concepts on how to warm up Mars range from detonating hydrogen bombs and guiding space rocks on a collision course with Mars to setting up little factories on the planet whose intent is to produce greenhouse gases.
• Much of the new Mars would be an icy world, like summer above the Arctic Circle, with atmospheric pressure equivalent to a mountain twice the height of Mt. Everest.
The next step is turning Mars green and producing a breathable atmosphere, which will be a much longer and more difficult process.
Lichen and moss, which thrive on carbon dioxide, will be the first imports of plant life from Earth, perhaps 50 to 100 years after warming begins. They build soil, create more nutrients and pave the way for grass and woody shrubs.

Once established, Martian forests will spread on their own, improving the soil and the atmosphere, creating a livable world for more than just plants.
It could take 100,000 years for trees to transform an icy blue Mars with a carbon dioxide atmosphere into a warm, green planet with enough oxygen for humans to breathe.
A fully terraformed Mars may never be as warm and wet as Earth because it's too small and too far from the sun. Low elevations where the atmosphere is thicker and regions near the equator will be the warmest.

George Carlin - Brain Droppings (book)

Brain Droppings is a 1997 book by comedian George Carlin. This was Carlin's "first real book" and contains much of Carlin's stand-up comedy material. According to the cover, the book contains "jokes, notions, doubts, opinions, questions, thoughts, beliefs, assertions, assumptions, and disturbing references" and "comedy, nonsense, satire, mockery, merriment, sarcasm, ridicule, silliness, bluster, and toxic alienation".

Brain Droppings Quotes
“People say, 'I'm going to sleep now,' as if it were nothing. But it's really a bizarre activity. 'For the next several hours, while the sun is gone, I'm going to become unconscious, temporarily losing command over everything I know and understand. When the sun returns, I will resume my life.'

If you didn't know what sleep was, and you had only seen it in a science fiction movie, you would think it was weird and tell all your friends about the movie you'd seen.

They had these people, you know? And they would walk around all day and be OK? And then, once a day, usually after dark, they would lie down on these special platforms and become unconscious. They would stop functioning almost completely, except deep in their minds they would have adventures and experiences that were completely impossible in real life. As they lay there, completely vulnerable to their enemies, their only movements were to occasionally shift from one position to another; or, if one of the 'mind adventures' got too real, they would sit up and scream and be glad they weren't unconscious anymore. Then they would drink a lot of coffee.'

So, next time you see someone sleeping, make believe you're in a science fiction movie. And whisper, 'The creature is regenerating itself.”

“I've begun worshipping the sun for a number of reasons. First of all, unlike some other gods I could mention, I can see the sun. It's there for me every day. And the things it brings me are quite apparent all the time: heat, light, food, and a lovely day. There's no mystery, no one asks for money, I don't have to dress up, and there's no boring pageantry. And interestingly enough, I have found that the prayers I offer to the sun and the prayers I formerly offered to "God" are all answered at about the same 50% rate.”
“No matter how you care to define it, I do not identify with the local group. Planet, species, race, nation, state, religion, party, union, club, association, neighborhood improvement committee; I have no interest in any of it. I love and treasure individuals as I meet them, I loathe and despise the groups they identify with and belong to.”
“Once you leave out all the bullshit they teach you in school, life gets really simple.”
“Don't confuse me with those who cling to hope. I enjoy describing how things are, I have no interest in how they 'ought to be.' And I certainly have no interest in fixing them. I sincerely believe that if you think there's a solution, you're part of the problem. My motto: Fuck Hope!”
  “I think therefore I am... I think.”

The X Files - José Chung's From Outer Space part 3 [final]

You ever flown a flying saucer ?
 Afterwards, sex seems trite.
But what do you do with the abductees ?
Take them back to the base. Let the doctors work on them.
Nothing physical. They just mess with their minds.
 Hypnosis.
At the base, I've seen people...go into an ordinary room with
an ordinary bunch of doctors...and then come out absolutely positive
they were probed by aliens.
But if abductions are just a covert intelligence operation...
and U.F.O.s are merely secret military airships piloted by aliens, such as yourself,
then what were you abducted by ?
Don’t you get it ?
I'm absolutely positive.
Me, my copilot and those two kids were abducted !
But I can't be absolutely sure it happened.
- I can't be sure of anything anymore.
- What do you mean ?
I'm not sure we're even having this conversation.
I don't know if these mashed potatoes are really here.
I don't know if you even exist.
I can only assure you that I do.
Well, thanks, buddy.
Unfortunately, I can't give you the same assurance about me.
 [Door Opens,
Footsteps Approaching]
Well, looks like I'm a dead man.
Wait. It can't all be fake memory implantation.
What about that third alien ?
What was that thing ?
 - Who ? Lord Kinbote ?
- [Man] All right. Come on.

 [Chung's Voice]
That is odd.
Because almost every day I was there I ate lunch at that diner...
and became dear friends with the cook.
He told me a story about the night you're talking about.
 - [Chung's Voice]
A man came into his place--
- Sweet potato pie.
 Sat down, ordered
sweet potato pie.
Identified himself as F.B.I. Agent Mulder.
 He then questioned my friend.
 You ever seen a U.F.O.
in these parts ?
He then ordered piece after piece,
each time asking another question.
You ever experienced a period of missing time ?
You ever have the suspicion that you’ve been abducted by aliens ?
Have you ever found a metal implant in your body ?
 Have you checked everywhere ?
He ate a whole pie in that fashion,
 then got up and left.
My friend never saw him again.
The cook never mentioned Lieutenant Sheaffer, let alone any other Air Force personnel.
You seem non-nonplussed by these contradictions.
No, not after what happened when Mulder left the diner and got back to the motel.
 Scully ?
 Where's Scully ?
Oh, she, uh, she went to get some ice.
 Where is she ?
What's going on ?
Mulder, these gentlemen have something important to tell you.
Some alien encounters are hoaxes perpetrated by your government to manipulate the public.
Some of these hoaxes are intentionally revealed to manipulate the truth seekers...
who become discredited if they disclose the deliberately absurd deception.
Similar things are said about the men in black.
They purposely dress and behave strangely,so if anyone tries to describe an encounter with them,
they sound like a lunatic.
I find no reason why anyone would think you crazy if you described this meeting of ours.
 You're feeling very sleepy,very relaxed.
 [Chung's Voice]
Alex Trebek ?
 The game show host ?
Mulder didn't say that it was Alex Trebek.
It was just someone that looked incredibly like him.
Did he ? I mean, you were there.
 Well, not exactly. I'm--
I don't have any recollection of this.
I...was surprised to wake up the next morning to find Mulder asleep in my room.
 Oh.
But, Mulder, I don't even remember letting you in.
I told you. You didn't let me in. They were already here.
 [Phone Rings]
 Scully.
 We'll be right there.
 That was Detective Manners.
He said they just found your bleepin' U.F.O.
 [Man] That's correct, sir.
Sergeant said go ahead and transport.
 [Man #2]
All right.
Apparently that was the cause of all those U.F. O. sightings three nights ago.
They refused our assistance because it's some kind of top secret experimental plane.
 They don't want our assistance.
They want witnesses to their alibi.
 Excuse me, ma'am.
Hey! That was the guy that was--
 Bleep !
I know it probably doesn't have the sense of closure that you want.
But it has more than some of our other cases.
 [Typewriter Keys Clacking]
 [Typewriter Keys Clacking]
 [Men Talking]

-[Man] Will you tell him ?
 Agent Mulder ?
What can I do for you, Agent Mulder ?
 Don't write this book.
You'll perform a disservice to a field of inquiry...that has always struggled
for respectability.
You're a gifted writer, but no amount of talent could describe...the events that occurred
in any realistic vein, because they deal with alternative
realities we’re yet to comprehend.
When presented in the wrong way, in the wrong context, the incidents and the people
involved can appear foolish,if not downright psychotic.
I also know that your publishing house
is owned by Warden White, incorporated,a subsidiary of MacDougall-Kesler, which
makes me suspect a covert agenda...for your book on the part of the military-industrial-
entertainment complex.
Agent Mulder, this book will be written.
But it can only benefit if you can explain something to me.
 What's that ?
What really happened to those kids on that night ?
How the hell should I know ?
Agent Mulder, I appreciate this little visit, but I have deadlines to face.

[Chung's Voice] Evidence of extraterrestrial existence remains as elusive as ever.
But the skies will continue to be searched by the likes of Blaine Faulkner,
hoping to someday find not only proof of alien life,
but also contentment on a new world.
Until then, he must be content with his new job--
 [ Gasps ]
Others search for answers from within.
Roky relocated to El Cajon, California,
preaching to the lost and desperate.
And so at each death, the soul descends further into the inner earth,
attaining ever greater levels of purification,
 reaching enlightenment at the core.
Assuming, of course, that your soul is able to avoid...
 the lava men.
[Chung's Voice] Seeking the truth about aliens means a perfunctory...
for although Agent "Diana Lesky" is noble of spirit and pure at heart,
she remains never the less a federal employee
As for her partner, "Raynard Muldrake, " a ticking time bomb of insanity,
his question to the unknown has so warped his psyche, one shudders to think how
he receives any pleasures from life.

Chrissy Giorgio has come to believe her alien visitation was message...
to improve the condition of her own world, and she has devoted herself
to this goal wholeheartedly.
[Chung's Voice] Then there are those who care not about extraterrestrials,
searching for meaning in other human beings.
Rare or lucky are those who find it.
For although we may not be alone in the universe,
in our own separate ways, on this planet,
we are all... alone.
